Tesla is quietly expanding one of the most useful features in its electric vehicle lineup.

The Model Y Premium in the United States and Puerto Rico can now support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to use energy stored in the vehicle’s high-voltage battery to power external devices and appliances.

The update was not announced through a major Tesla product launch. Instead, the option appeared in Tesla’s online vehicle configurator, making it a relatively low-key addition to the Model Y lineup. According to recent reports, the system can deliver up to 2.4 kW of power through Tesla’s optional Outlet Adapter.

The move brings V2L to a more mainstream Model Y configuration, although several limitations remain.

What Is V2L?

Vehicle-to-Load, commonly abbreviated as V2L, allows an electric vehicle to function as a portable power source.

Instead of simply receiving electricity through its charging port, the vehicle can send stored battery energy back out to external electrical devices.

For Model Y owners, this could be useful in situations such as:

  • Camping and outdoor trips

  • Roadside emergencies

  • Powering laptops and mobile devices

  • Running lights

  • Charging e-bikes

  • Operating small power tools

  • Keeping a refrigerator running during a short power outage

  • Providing temporary power at a job site

In other words, the Model Y's battery becomes more than an energy source for driving. It can also serve as a large portable battery when needed.

Tesla's Puerto Rico Model Y page currently highlights the ability of compatible Model Y vehicles to use the Tesla Outlet Adapter to power devices and appliances such as space heaters, e-bikes and power tools.

Model Y Premium Can Now Deliver Up to 2.4 kW

The newly enabled V2L capability supports a maximum output of approximately 2.4 kW.

The system operates at up to 120 volts and 20 amps, making it suitable for many common household and outdoor electrical devices.

However, Tesla does not provide a conventional built-in household outlet inside the Model Y specifically for this function.

Instead, owners need Tesla's Outlet Adapter, which works together with the Gen 3 Mobile Connector.

The basic setup works like this:

Model Y → NACS charging port → Gen 3 Mobile Connector → Tesla Outlet Adapter → external device

The adapter provides two 120-volt outlets, allowing compatible electrical equipment to draw power directly from the vehicle.

The adapter is priced at approximately $80 in the U.S. and can be selected during vehicle configuration or purchased separately through Tesla.

Not Every Model Y Has V2L

One of the most important details for existing Tesla owners is that V2L availability depends on the vehicle's hardware and configuration.

The feature is currently associated with newer Model Y Premium vehicles in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. It is not simply a software feature that every Model Y can automatically receive.

The entry-level Model Y does not currently offer the same capability, while Model 3 vehicles also remain outside Tesla's V2L lineup.

Tesla's current Puerto Rico Model Y lineup includes Model Y, Model Y Premium, Model Y L Premium and Model Y Performance. The company's specifications also identify power-sharing functionality on compatible configurations.

This means buyers should check the exact trim, production hardware and regional configuration before purchasing an Outlet Adapter.

V2L Is Still Limited to the U.S. and Puerto Rico

For now, the expansion appears to be limited geographically.

The V2L option has become available for Model Y Premium vehicles sold in the United States and Puerto Rico, while the same functionality has not yet been made available for Model Y vehicles in Canada and Europe according to current reports.

That regional limitation is not unusual for Tesla.

Tesla frequently introduces hardware and software features in selected markets first, with availability depending on vehicle configuration, regulations, charging standards and production hardware.

Owners outside North America should therefore avoid assuming that a U.S.-market Model Y V2L setup will work identically with vehicles sold in other regions.

How Does Tesla's V2L Compare With Other EVs?

Tesla's addition of V2L is significant, but the company is not leading the segment in output power.

For example, Hyundai has offered V2L capability on the Ioniq 5 in the U.S. with output of up to 3.6 kW, while Kia has implemented similar technology across several EV models.

Ford has also pushed bidirectional power further with the F-150 Lightning, while some electric pickup trucks can provide substantially higher power for tools, appliances and emergency backup applications.

Tesla's 2.4 kW output is therefore relatively modest.

Still, for many everyday situations, 2.4 kW is enough.

V2L allows a vehicle to power individual external devices.

V2H, or Vehicle-to-Home, allows an EV to supply electricity to an entire home through an appropriate energy-management and electrical system.

The Model Y's new capability is V2L, not V2H.

Tesla's Powershare technology remains associated with Cybertruck rather than the Model Y. Recent reporting notes that Tesla has not yet enabled the Model Y to function as a whole-home backup battery.

That means Model Y owners cannot simply connect the vehicle to a home's electrical panel and power the entire house during an outage.

Instead, users would need to connect individual appliances or devices through the Outlet Adapter and appropriate extension cables.

Why This Matters for Model Y Owners

Despite its limitations, V2L changes the practical role of the Model Y.

A typical EV spends most of its time parked. During those hours, a large battery pack represents a significant amount of stored energy that normally remains unused.

V2L provides another way to use that energy.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the feature could make the Model Y a particularly useful camping companion. Owners could potentially power lighting, electronic equipment, cooking equipment or other compatible devices without carrying a separate portable power station.

For emergency situations, the benefits may be even more obvious.

A refrigerator, communication equipment or medical-device-related equipment that requires relatively modest power could potentially be kept running temporarily, provided the equipment is compatible and the vehicle has sufficient battery charge.

A Bigger Step for Tesla's Bidirectional Charging Strategy

Tesla has historically been slower than several competitors to adopt consumer-facing bidirectional charging.

The Cybertruck was the first Tesla vehicle to receive V2L-related functionality, followed by the Model Y Performance. The Model Y L also introduced the capability as part of its feature set.

Bringing the technology to the Model Y Premium is therefore an important expansion.

The Premium is positioned much closer to the mainstream Model Y market than the company's higher-performance or specialty configurations.

That could eventually give Tesla a much larger installed base of vehicles capable of supplying electricity to external devices.

What About the Model Y Juniper?

For current and prospective Model Y owners, one question is especially important: Does every new Model Y Juniper support V2L?

The answer appears to be no.

The capability is tied to specific hardware and trim configurations rather than simply the exterior generation of the vehicle.

This distinction matters because "Model Y Juniper" generally describes the refreshed Model Y design, while Tesla's current lineup has evolved into different trims with different hardware configurations.

Therefore, owners should verify V2L compatibility through the vehicle configuration, Tesla's documentation or the Tesla app rather than assuming that every Juniper vehicle has the required hardware.

What Tesla Could Do Next

The introduction of V2L raises an obvious question: will Tesla eventually enable more advanced bidirectional charging on the Model Y?

The company's current technology direction suggests that bidirectional energy management could become increasingly important.

A future Model Y capable of V2L, V2H and potentially V2G could transform the vehicle from a transportation product into a mobile energy-storage platform.

Imagine a future Model Y that could:

  • Power appliances during an outage

  • Store excess solar energy

  • Supply electricity to a home

  • Sell electricity back to the grid

  • Support outdoor and camping equipment

  • Act as a backup battery for a home energy system

That would significantly increase the value of the battery beyond driving range alone.

Tesla's addition of V2L to the Model Y Premium is a meaningful upgrade, even if it arrives with several limitations.

Nevertheless, the direction is significant.

For Model Y owners, the car may soon be useful for much more than simply getting from one destination to another.

It could also become a portable source of electricity whenever you need it.
